Interpreting
Interpreting is repeating the content of a speech in a language the recipient understands. It enables oral communication between people who do not share a language. Our experience in interpretation includes medical and societal commissions and conference interpreting. We offer interpreting services for these and many other situations from Finnish to English and English to Finnish.
The nature of the occasion determines what kind of interpretation is needed. Conference interpreting refers to interpretation in a formal setting, such as meetings and conferences. Community interpreting, on the other hand, is typically needed in conversations with officials, such as for an asylum seeker, parent-teacher interpreting, medical interpreting, court proceeding or police investigation.
Modes of interpretation can also be divided into several categories and their use is determined, for example, by how many people are involved, what language directions are needed, do all participants require an interpreter as well as what kind of space and equipment are available. Conference interpreting is usually done as simultaneous interpretation, where as the mode of consecutive interpreting is usually applied to community interpreting.
In consecutive interpretation the interpreter listens to the the speaker and prepares with notes to interpret the message when the speaker stops talking. The speaker and the interpreter talk in turns and ideally this is done in short enough periods to allow for the interpreter to repeat the message as accurately as possible.
In simultaneous interpreting the interpreter speaks simultaneously with the speaker. The interpreter both listens to the speaker and interprets what is said at the same time. Special equipment is needed for simultaneous interpreting. Usually this means an interpreter booth, which is a soundproof booth with equipment for listening to the speaker and transmitting the interpretation to digital receivers (for meeting participants).
Simultaneous interpreting is also practicable for community interpreting or alternatively whisper interpreting could be feasible.

Whisper interpreting is especially useful when interpreting is only needed by the other party. This can be done for one or two people at a time, unless portable equipment is available. The interpretation is done by whispering while trying not to disturb other participants.
Interpretation can be done either in location or remotely via phone or video. Please contact us and we will determine the best interpretation method for your needs.
