Machine translation post-editing (MTPE)
In this golden age of machine-aided text production, it’s especially important to pay attention to how the text looks to the reader. For example, artificial intelligence (AI) is a great tool when you need a text quickly, whether an intralingual or a translation. However, AI is at its best an auxiliary tool, and its ability to produce finished text should not be trusted blindly. The text produced by an AI is often machine-like in style, which does not reach the hearts and minds of your audience in the same way as a text produced by humans. It may also contain factual errors, which reduce the reliability of the text and may even lead to annoying misunderstandings or other problems.
Around two-thirds of the assignments we receive today focus specifically on post-editing machine translations.
Text from a machine, quality from a professional
The grammatical structures of the Finnish language, especially the great number of cases, makes it a difficult language for a machine translation. This is why the quality of texts produced by machine translators are inconsistent between systems, since a great amount of knowledge is needed for the machine to make the text understandable. For that reason, machine translations are not usually used as they are, but instead a translator or a linguistic expert post-edits the text. Machine translation can be a useful tool, but depending on the quality, it can also be completely useless. In addition, it is important to remember that free, i.e. public, translation softwares are not data-secure. Remember to ensure that your data does not end up in public use.
